Plant Names, Scientific And Popular, Including In The Case Of Each Plant The Correct Botanical Name In Accordance With The Reformed Nomenclature, Together With Botanical And Popular Synonyms

Authority for every plant name. A concise botanical reference guide.Originally compiled by A. B. Lyons in the Victorian period, this alphabetical compendium sets out, for each entry, the correct botanical name in accordance with the reformed nomenclature, together with botanical and popular synonyms. Its practical layout turns historical labels and varied local names into clear identification: it serves as a plant identification manual for field and study, a botanical nomenclature resource for professional reference and a plant synonyms directory for gardeners and anyone deciphering old seed catalogues or herbarium labels. Entries provide modern scientific plant names while preserving the popular and scientific names once used in nurseries and natural history texts, making cross-reference simple and dependable. Concise, plainly worded entries and systematic cross-references make it quick to consult in the field, at the bench or in an archive, whether checking a cultivated variety or confirming a wild species mentioned in nineteenth-century journals.Valuable to gardeners and botanists, plant taxonomy students and scholars of Victorian plant studies, the volume sits at the intersection of practical horticulture and nineteenth-century botany. Use it to confirm identifications, track changing usage, or establish provenance for period plant lists; its indexed structure functions as a complete plant name index for research, conservation and restoration projects. As a horticultural reference book it translates an older vocabulary into today's terms, helping with garden restoration, label-making and historic planting plans. For archivists, conservators and garden historians it aids provenance and plant identity; for botanical illustrators and teachers it supplies historically accurate names to match plates and lessons.Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Perfect for casual gardeners and classic-literature collectors alike. An indispensable companion for libraries and private shelves.
