The book is a detailed and insightful exploration of this critical period in Irish history. It takes a chronological approach, looking initially at Ireland in the first decade of the twentieth century before focusing on the Ulster Crisis of 1911–14. The author also examines the impact of the First World War and the Easter Rising on Irish politics as well as the events leading up to partition in 1921, including the Anglo-Irish War. The final chapters explore the impact of the Irish Civil War in the Irish Free State and the first years of the state of Northern Ireland.
