Throughout Suffolk’s history, important national figures have played a role in the county. This book explores locations around the county linked with historical figures and major events, from the Peasants’ Revolt to the Latitude Festival. St Edmund, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, artists John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough, Archbishop of Canterbury Simon Sudbury (killed during the Peasants’ Revolt), poet George Crabbe, and Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (pioneering physician and feminist) were all born or raised in Suffolk. Buildings, monuments and the landscape have been associated with the likes of Anne Boleyn, who stayed with relatives in Suffolk, and her heart is supposedly buried in a Suffolk church; Charles Dickens, George Orwell, Ruth Rendell and P. D. James who wrote books in and on the county; and composer and Aldeburgh Festival founder Benjamin Britten. Film and television series that use Suffolk locations include Harry Potter, The Crown, Downton Abbey and Detectorists.
