This all new fourth edition brings together the two versions, providing practical guidance on the use of theory for everyone involved in social work.

This new edition explores the nature of social work theory as an ‘umbrella term’ in social work, clarifying the difference between theories, models, methods and approaches. The 8 sections and 56 chapters offer a clear explanation of the major theories used within social work. Ideas about application to practice and suggestions for developing theory informed practice are included throughout.

This edition provides a space to explore longstanding traditional theories in social work, alongside inviting readers to consider the way that practice has changed in recent years and how contemporary theory might address this.
