Shakespeare'S Hand In The Play Of Sir Thomas More

Who really wrote the contested passages in the play Sir Thomas More? A mystery of authorship revealed. In Shakespeare's Hand in the Play of Sir Thomas More, Alfred W. Pollard delivers a probing, readable study that anchors shakespearean authorship studies within broader elizabethan drama analysis. Pollard combines close reading with palaeographic observation and archival context, mapping the textual fingerprints that have long fascinated scholars. His approach makes historical literary criticism tangible: linguistic rhythms, orthographic habit and stage direction are read as clues to collaboration rather than mysteries of composition. The book frames the Sir Thomas More play not as an isolated curiosity but as a node in english renaissance literature and early modern English theatre, one that speaks to how plays were made, revised and valued in 16th century England.Accessible to curious readers yet indispensable for specialists, Pollard's essay functions as both an introduction to debates over authorship and a sturdy academic reference collection for libraries and private shelves. It speaks directly to collaborative playwriting research - how multiple hands, printers and revisers left traces that demand attentive reading - and complements the wider field of tudor period scholarship and shakespeare studies companion volumes. As a literature students resource, it furnishes clear exemplars for seminar work and independent study, while collectors of early printed scholarship will appreciate its historical resonance and critical acuity. Pollard's method - patient, evidence-led and elegantly argued - remains exemplary for historical literary criticism and for contemporary collaborative playwriting research. Its concise argument and historical sensitivity make it a fine shakespeare studies companion for university courses and a welcome jewel in any academic reference collection. Readers interested in early modern theatre will gain a lively picture of performance practices and editorial habit, set against the political and social pressures of the age. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
