Edward III is at war with Scotland. Eager to prove himself, nineteen-year-old Sir Harry de Lyon accepts a secret mission from a powerful baron, William Montagu, to ride north with a handful of knights to storm a remote Scottish keep.

Amid crumbling ruins, they capture a feral, half-starved teenage boy—Iain mac Mail Coluim. Montagu gives him to Harry as his squire, with only two rules: don't let him escape, and convert him to the English cause.

At first, it's hopeless. The Scottish boy is surly and violent. Then Harry begins to notice things: that, as well as Gaelic, the boy speaks flawless French and can read Latin too. And after he persuades Iain to cut his filthy curtain of hair, he discovers a strikingly beautiful face beneath.

With Iain as his squire, Harry wins tournament after tournament and becomes a favourite of the King. But underneath the pageantry smoulder twin secrets: Harry and Iain's growing passion for each other, and Iain's mysterious heritage. As England hurtles towards war once again, these secrets threaten to destroy everything Harry holds dear.

Alex de Campi is a British-born American author and comics writer. Her work spans historical romance, thriller, horror and noir. She is the author of "The Scottish Boy", a medieval historical romance, as well as the Eisner-nominated graphic novel "Bad Girls" and the paranormal thriller "Heartbreak Incorporated".
