There has long been significant interest from both the scientific and artistic communities in the topic of what are known internationally as Semi Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises (SOVTEs).

Such exercises are recognized worldwide for facilitating the attainment of an intuitive and rapid balance of the forces involved in phonation, and have proved particularly effective in vocal warm-ups for both speaking and singing. The insight that prompted the authors to combine their respective expertise and “take a step forward” was the perception that semi-occlusions were not merely useful exercises for vocal warm-up, but also potential allies in the study of singing and in speech therapy.
